“**** , is that even human hand!?” We often see on the TV show of some martial artist who uses bare hand to cut wooden boards, chop concrete bricks and break coconuts like thse physical objects are just pieces of foam (or even better Marshmallow!) , and you would definitely wow then wonder how do they do that. Needless to speculating, your immediate answer would be ‘years of consistent training’.

Then we start to think, “wait a minute, I chew food everyday too still my teeth cannot break the keyboard”. Then, my instant thought would be no, you do not want to try that. Martial Arts looks as beautiful as the decorative branches and leaves, but if you do not have the strong understanding of where the roots are and how they draw the energy, you never get to have the fruits or maybe fall into injury yourself. You must see through the result to meet where the effort was. Having a strong hand does not mean particularly the hand is strong. The hand only simulates the delivery of the force which has been internally built up, along with the techniques. There are two type of Palm techniques, fall into two opposite categories of Qigong (pronounced chi-kun, Inner Energy exercise) : Soft and Hard.

The Hard Qigong forges the inner hand structure from daily practices on hard objects, and in the end result the palm delivers explosive force on whatever it tends to break. The downside of Hard Qigong Palm Technique is the hands often become bigger, covered with bruises and layers of damaged skin, as well as the force being generated is more purely physical. The Soft Palm Technique, delivers the same amount of energy but takes twice or more the amount of times of training. The hand of this style practitioner look soft, natural and nearly the same as before the training. Nevertheless if one concentrates and focuses the inner Qi (Energy – read What is Qi?) to the Dantien (read What in the name is Dantien?) and controls this very energy to the point upon impact, along with the universal power, the outcome is predictable, that is deadly. In many cases, people usually want the instant result for it is not easy to wait for something patiently, therefore most of the time Hard Qigong Palm Practice is preferred to Soft Qigong Palm Practice. The one inch punch is a martial art technique, was once performed by Bruce Lee at Long Beach in the year 1964 and gained Lee fame. We are not Lee and we may not have that Hulk’s power to actually do it in any way. However, it is not difficult to execute the technique if you learn the basic elements of how it works. I feel quite guilty to walk you through such unethical trick, but a technique is still a technique and if it looks good in both form and movements, why shouldn’t we take a look at it?

This article was originally titled “Aerial Assault: San Shou Champ Cung Le Reveals the Secrets of High Kicks and Flying Leg Attacks!” It originally appeared in the December 2004 issue of Black Belt.
________________________________________________

“Kick high for show, but kick low in real life.” If you’re a student, you’ve no doubt heard that bit of advice, and if you’re an instructor with a sense of realism, you’ve probably given it on more than a few occasions. In many situations, high kicks are more dangerous to the kicker than the kicked. The reasons are simple, and there are plenty of them.

High kicks tend to require more time to get to their target, thus allowing more time for your opponent to evade and/or counterattack. A vigilant foe could potentially plant a stop-kick into your thigh, then follow the technique’s momentum forward and launch a barrage of attacks.

High kicks also tend to leave huge openings in your defenses. For example, if you initiate a round kick to the head, you may leave yourself exposed to a vicious low sweep aimed at your supporting leg, a front kick to your hip, a low round kick to your groin or a shooting tackle to your rear leg.

Lastly, high kicks tend to leave your kicking leg up in the air too long, and that can be all the opportunity an experienced fighter needs to grab your attacking limb and dump you on the ground.

With so many reasons not to kick above the waist, it’s obvious why certain martial sports have adopted rules that prohibit stop-kicks, grabbing an opponent’s leg and kicking below the belt. With the advent of some of the newer competitions, the vast majority of fighters are kicking low and kicking hard to prevent their adversaries from grabbing their legs. Low kicks are clearly a solid choice for the serious combatant.

But not for Cung Le. (more…)

The old Kung Fu master touched his assailant, with no apparent effect. Days later, the assailant died a sudden and mysterious death. He was a victim of the legendary dim mak, the touch of death.

dim mak

Dim mak
is a popular discussion topic among martial arts enthusiasts. Some instructors claim to have the skill, or believe that it was used to kill Bruce Lee. Others insist that dim mak instructors are frauds and the skill itself is a complete fantasy. Is there any evidence to support the existence of dim mak? Could it possibly work?

“Free my hands and I’ll varnish this floor with your brains!”

Sometimes when you are threatened with physical violence, a weapon to defend yourself with is not always available. Your hands, however, are always with you, and can be as lethal as any weapon. Below are a list of attacks that Police are instructed not employ, as they may prove deadly.

1. TEMPLE- A very susceptible vital spot. If struck with sufficient force, may cause unconsciousness or death. (more…)
