If you train Martial Arts, especially traditional styles, more than once in a while you would hear your Siifu or Sensei mentions about Dantien and tells you to focus your breath into it. Needless to say, you should instantly know, by common sense, that Dantian is not a type food or a beautiful girl as well as not a handsome guy. Technically, it is your centre just below your navel. But why is it that this place so important? Let’s flip the pages of history all the way to the very first chapters of civilization, of China to be specific.
Not just few years ago, but it’s way back to the ancient times when the population of China was occupied by peasants, poorest farmers of the lowest classes in the society. They call a day by starting as early as the fifth hour in the morning, sweating in the fields until sunset. Then, they return homes for some rest. If you are young, you would gather with your friends listening to stories of the village elders, while some others would enjoy the the cool night air that just silently replaced the heat of the day. What do you feel when you practise Qigong? There are so many answers. Sometimes you will feel warm, tingling feelings, sometimes you will feel emotional and maybe feel like crying. Sometimes you might even feel like laughing. Some people will say they feel peaceful, more aware of the Qi (read What is Qi and how to feel your own energy ball?) flowing inside the body, pulsing and some people will even see colours, pictures, people, scenery and even smell things.
There are so many different feelings. When you practise movement, we usually feel good, warm and the breathing is very deep. Sometimes though, you might feel stiff or ache. This is quite normal because when you move, you open your body up and allow the Qi to flow all around it and find any problems you might have. It is like water washing the dirt out of your clothes. Qi cleans up the internal organs and even your joints, muscles, skin and bones. Qigong is like giving your body a good service, the same you do with your car. If you always maintain your body and keep it in good condition how can you not be healthy? This is one area that Western medicine misses and is going in the wrong direction. (more…)
Dayan Qigong, was found in the year of 385, is one of the deepest and most profound internal meditative practices in the world. Each step follows closely to the movement of the Wild Goose (Dayan) in the nature. Dayan Qigong smoothly opens the 108 acupuncture points, along with all channel and organs in the body.
It used to be a secret arts and was passed only inside a family from generation to generation until the Grandmaster Yang Meijun began to teach it into public, at the age of 73, to preserve this very valuable skill (Read more at History of the 106 Year Old Grandmaster Yang Meijun (Dương Mai Quân) and Dayan Wild Goose Qigong (Đại nhạn khí công) ). Many years ago a family lived in a part of Beijing, China. The family consisted of a little 13 year old girl, her parents and her seventy year old grandfather, Yang Tak Shan. They all relied on the money her father made pulling a rickshaw. Life was very simple, but they were all happy. One day Yang Tak Shan took his grand daughter Yang Meijun to While Flower Temple. When they were inside he set up some joss sticks and told her to kneel and pray to Kuan Yin (Quan Âm), the female Buddha. Then he said to her: “You are the twenty seventh inheritor of the Kunlun Dayan Qigong system”.
He took out eight copper wild geese from his bag. Each one was performing a vivid movement: flying up, drinking water, scratching its leg, sleeping, etc. He showed these to his young grand daughter and told her to follow the movements of the wild geese when she learned Qigong. (more…)
“Some people can bend spoons using their mind but this is not the aim of Qigong.”
Someone asked me what is the higher level of Qigong…is it when a person can fly, heal thousands of people or use the mind to bend metal? I said that high level Qigong is not any of these things. It is to be healthy and live longer. There are some people who, after practising Qigong for a while are able to heal people and see things with their Sky Eye that other people can not see. There are also people who are able to bend spoons using their mind but this is not the aim of practising Qigong. The aim is to be healthy and when you are healthy, of course, you can live longer. Why do we get ill? Why don’t we live to 100 or 150 years old? The answers to these questions may lead us to a very healthy existence.
Chinese medicine attempts to answer these questions in terms of Qi (vital energy). Qi is the energy which sustains us. If you, don’t maintain your qi then maybe you will become tired and ill. For example, when you finish work. You go home, you might watch T.V, read a book, or even go to the pub and have a drink. Afterwards you feel tired, even though you’ve been relaxing. Why? You feel tired because you have been using your energy, even reading a book uses energy! When your energy is low you will start to feel weak and tired. In this condition you will easily become ill.
